Abstract (english)
Background. Appendicitis among immunocompromised solid organ transplantat recipients is an important diagnosis to make promptly. The impaired immune response in these patients may cause a delay in diagnosis and an increase in complications. Methods. We reviewed records of 350 patients who received solid organ transplants at University Hospital Merkur between1998 and 2009 and subsequently underwent appendectomy for presumed acute appendicitis. Results. The first case was a 75-year-old man, admitted for acute appendicitis with a periappendiceal abscess 2 years after liver transplantation. He was treated conservatively and subsequently underwent interval appendectomy. The second patient was a 34-year-old woman, admitted for acute appendicitis with adiffuse peritonitis 3 years after simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation.Conclusions. This report discusses the clinical presentation,hospital course and possible complications of appendicitis in two transplant recipients. Both patients recovered after surgery with a good graft function.
